With Nick Ashton Jones wrote the text of the winning tender for a Euros. 30m. project and established the basis and approach to project identification and support, following project inception, July 2003.

Project: Niger Delta Environmental Survey

His initiatives following community disturbances during 1994 in Nigeria led to Shell’s setting up the Niger Delta Environmental Survey (NDES, 1995), to address environmental remediation and community development. Struan served on the NDES Steering Committee for three years (1995-97) defining the scene and agenda for Shell’s current stance on community and social responsibility and continues to assist Shell in it’s on-going programme.

Protected area management in the Philippines

Project: National Integrated Protected Areas Programme (European Union & Government of the Philippines)

As technical advisor and editorial co-ordinator to the National Integrated Protected Area Programme (NIPAP) for five missions (1999-2001), funded by the European Union and the Philippines Government, Struan organised an information unit within the protected area system, producing training material for communities to be stakeholders in the protected area process. The EU cited this project, co-directed by Nick Ashton-Jones, as the being most successful that it has funded in South-East Asia.

Secretary to the Conservation Foundation’s Advisory Panel to the Scottish Widows Environment Investor Fund (the leading ethical fund in the UK by reputation and performance) and author/editor of its bi-annual newsletter (1994-2001).

Project: Environmental Science & public policy

Initiated a series of public lectures (David Bellamy Master Classes, 1995-98) linking environmental science to public policy, with speakers from the World Bank, Natural Science Research Council (NERC), Royal Botanic Society, Kew, Department for International Development (DFID) and other government and scientific bodies, funded by Rio Tinto.

Project: Health, safety & environment reporting

Period/Date: December 1991-March 1992. BP (1991/92), health, safety & environment reporting, leading to BP winning the ACCA award for environmental reporting (New Horizons, 1994).
