Struan Simpson, director of St James's Research, designs, manages and advises multi-disciplinary projects that focus on social, institutional and strategic planning, building capacity in developing countries and countries in economic transition towards sustainable development.

Activities range from promoting environmental law, to protected area management and a variety of related professional engagements fostering networking and partnerships, facilitating training, conferences and workshops in order to bring about co-operation between government, business and civil society.

"Beneficiaries" of these endeavours thus far include EECCA countries, West Africa (Ghana & Nigeria) and S-E Asia (the Philippines).

Projects and programmes have been have been funded by Tacis and the [Environmental] Know How Fund (EECCA), Shell (Nigeria) and the European Union (Nigeria and the Philippines). Less recently, work in Nigeria and Ghana on health and family planning was funded by DFID’s predecessors (ODA) and the Ford Foundation (from whom he received a Mid-Career Fellowship).

In the period 2004-07, a major part of his work has been on behalf of the Leventis Foundation, with additional funding from Shell, Coca-Cola, the British embassies at Kyiv and Tbilisi and the British Council, in partnership with EECCA NGOs.

As well as project initiation and direction, he works equally comfortably as project leader or team member. These roles best characterise his recent assignments in Nigeria on conflict assessment, in the Philippines, training and motivating local stakeholders in protected area management: and on the steering committee of the Niger Delta Environmental Survey where his in-puts were instrumental in shaping Shell’s adoption of the principles of corporate social responsibility.

Citations of excellence have been made by Tacis for his environmental law and policy training programme undertaken in partnership with Imperial College London; and by the former Department of Energy for his work on offshore safety statistics. The EU described the Philippines project overall as the most successful it has funded in S-E Asia. A recent international environment conference, funded by the Leventis Foundation was cited (World Bank) as being the most significant environmental event in Ukraine since the Environment for Europe ministerial conference, Kyiv-2003. Following its participation in a Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) video-conference, linking EECCA countries to Western Europe, the European Environment Agency undertook to train its staff in "sustainable communications" techniques.

He is currently developing an EECCA-wide programme to train the judiciary on the principles of the Aarhus Convention, especially public participation and Access to Justice.

Published output is extensive, as author, editor and mentor, including books, training documentation, papers and reports some of which are cited on the Internet.
